Partnership in Simple Terms: How to Build a Healthy Relationship

By Barbara Stacey · 6 June 2025 · 5 min read

Partnership is more than just being together—it’s a shared journey where we learn about ourselves, embrace our flaws, and work on ourselves to create a harmonious relationship. This blog post is meant to be a light and straightforward guide to what true partnership means for those who want to better understand their relationships. It does not contain any religious references and focuses instead on growth and love.

1. Why Are We in a Relationship?

Imagine you come to live on Earth to experience things – love, but also tougher emotions like pain, anger, or sadness. These experiences help us grow. The partner you’re with isn’t random – they’re someone who helps you see yourself, your strengths, and the areas that need healing, often called “holes in the soul.”

These “holes” are emotions from the past – sadness, fear, or resentment – that formed in childhood when something was missing, like attention, acceptance, or security. A relationship is like a mirror: it shows what in us needs work. Your partner isn’t there to “fix” these holes but to help you notice them and heal them yourself.

2. What Do We Expect from Our Partner?

Often, without realising it, we expect our partner to give us what we lacked in childhood. For example:

These expectations are natural but can lead to frustration when your partner doesn’t meet them. Instead of expecting them to “fix” your sadness or fear, focus on working on yourself. Partnership isn’t about asking for love but sharing it. When you’re filled with self-acceptance and love, it’s easier to give the same to your partner.

3. Love Is Acceptance

Picture yourself as a vessel through which energy flows. If you’re filled with love and acceptance, you look at the world and your partner with warmth and kindness. But if your heart is dominated by anger, resentment, or pain, these emotions shape your reactions. You might blame your partner, withdraw, or try to control them.

True love is about acceptance – of yourself and your partner, flaws and all. This doesn’t mean self-sacrifice but understanding that we all have wounds, and together, we can support each other in healing them.

4. Partnership Is Shared Growth

Partnership isn’t just about romantic moments. It’s about working on yourselves together, growing as individuals and as a couple. The key is:

For instance, if you feel betrayed, it’s not about blaming your partner but noticing what wounds this situation has opened in you. Perhaps it’s a fear of rejection or a lack of trust? By working on yourself, you can turn pain into strength and reach a place where you feel: “I am love, and love flows through me.”

5. How to Avoid Pitfalls in a Relationship?

We often fall into patterns that pull us away from true partnership:

Instead, ask yourself:

6. How to Build a Healthy Partnership?

  1. Know yourself. Reflect on the emotions and expectations you bring into the relationship. How does your childhood shape your reactions?
  2. Work on your “holes in the soul”. If you feel sadness, anger, or fear, allow yourself to feel these emotions. You might talk to a therapist, meditate, or keep a journal to understand them better.
  3. Be yourself. Discover what you do effortlessly – perhaps organising the home or earning money? Embrace your talents, and don’t resent your partner for doing things differently.
  4. Communicate. Speak openly about your needs but also listen to your partner. Partnership is a dialogue: “I take care of myself for me and for you, and you do the same for yourself and for me.”
  5. Take a risk. If you’re overly controlling, try letting go. If you feel you give too little, engage more. Change starts with you.

7. Partnership Is Growth

A relationship isn’t an end goal but a path to becoming a better version of yourself. Your partner helps you see what needs attention, and you do the same for them. Sometimes one of you makes a big leap forward, and the other needs to catch up – and that’s beautiful because you grow together.

Don’t be afraid to take action. Nowadays, we have access to knowledge – podcasts, books, workshops. But knowledge alone isn’t enough. Start with small steps: notice what you feel and ask how you can change it. Partnership isn’t about standing still; it’s a shared journey towards love and acceptance.

In Two Sentences:
Partnership is about caring for yourself for your own sake and your partner’s, with love and acceptance. It’s a shared path where you both learn, grow, and discover who you truly are.
